The Bic brand was born in 1945 when Marcel Bich (the brand's namesake) and his partner Edouard Buffard manufactured its first fountain pen and mechanical pencil parts in France. By 1954 Bic broke into the Italian market followed by Brazil, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa before reaching the United States in 1958. It wasn't until 1969, however, that Bic promotional products became available. Up until 1973, Bic only manufactured writing instruments such as various types of pens and pencils.
The brand soon started to expand with the production of lighters, shavers, drawing instruments and Wite-Out. Bic promotional pens continued to expand, and by 1997 sister brands such as Shaeffer and Stypen (in 2004) were built to appeal to a new demographic with upscale fountain pens.
