Product of the Week: Gemline Pink Piccolo Cooler Tote

With October only a few short months away, it's about time to start thinking about Breast Cancer Awareness items. Did you know?

About 182,460 women in the United States will be found to have invasive breast cancer in 2008.
About 40,480 women will die from the disease this year.
The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8.
The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35.

Those are some frightening statistics. While breast cancer awareness promotional products will not help decrease these numbers they will make women and men more aware of the problem. That's why I love this week's product of the Week: Gemline Pink Piccolo Cooler Tote

Water Filled Piggy Bank

This unique promotional piggy bank was custom designed to promote the message that the RBC Blue Water Project wanted. When change was dropped into the piggy bank, it causes a box at the bottom sink, making the water level inside the bank rise. The message? Your Donation Creates More Clean Water. When done correctly, custom promotional products can send the perfect message.

Promotional Slot Machines

I love Vegas and I want to go back. I've only been once and the fact that I didn't take a gondola ride at the Venetian Hotel still bothers me, almost as much as the fact that I've never been to Venice to take a real gondola ride. There's plenty more to love about Vegas than that though. And one of my personal favorites: slot machines.

I don't play the expensive ones, mostly because I don't like spending money all that often. I thoroughly enjoy the Super Slot Machine application on Facebook, because its free and even though I'm not winning money there's just something about winning anything that makes me happy. To this day, I still have fond recollection of the time that my friend Andrew and I won the jackpot on the Deal or No Deal machine at Dave and Busters. We screamed like we had just hit the lotto and it was slightly ridiculous.

So it's not surprising, considering my love of casino promotional products, that I love this slot machine that's in Vegas right now. If you have the money that eBay does, you can probably get one as well!

Promotional T-Shirts: They're in the Mail..

Or rather, they are the mail. This unique promotion for a new laundry detergent in Thailand consisted of taking a white t-shirt, wrapping it around a box and writing an address on it. It was then sent through the postal system to consumers and a sample of the laundry detergent was inside the box, along with a guarantee that the t-shirt will be clean with just one wash.

I've seen promotional t-shirts used for various things, but I can't say that I've ever seen anything quite like this. Hope the detergent works, because I wouldn't wear a t-shirt with my name and address on it. That's just asking for identity theft.

Promotional Snack Table Advertises MacBook Air in the Friendly Skies

I'm not sure what airline did this joint promotion with the Mac Book Air, but bravo to whoever it was. As anyone who flies knows, during take off and landing your tray tables should always be in the upright and locked position. However, when you fly with this airline and you put it down, you notice that it's designed exactly like the Mac Book Air, the thinnest computer ever made.

Mac Book Air in the friendly skies? Yep, that will work. Apple never ceases to amaze me with their inventive promotional products.

Where Has My Book Been?

This promotion for the Ariel Stain Stick looks interesting at first glance, but upon further instruction its actually much cooler than it seems. The outside of the book looks as if it's an instruction guide on how to get rid of stains, and upon opening the reader sees that there is an Ariel Stain Stick stuck in the middle of the book.

That's not the cool part though. Anyone who found the book was then instructed to go to bookcrossing.com and see where the book has been. According to the website:

BookCrossing is earth-friendly, and gives you a way to share your books, clear your shelves, and conserve precious resources at the same time. Through our own unique method of recycling reads, BookCrossers give life to books. A book registered on BookCrossing is ready for adventure.

Leave it on a park bench, a coffee shop, at a hotel on vacation. Share it with a friend or tuck it onto a bookshelf at the gym -- anywhere it might find a new reader! What happens next is up to fate, and we never know where our books might travel. Track the book's journey around the world as it is passed on from person to person.

I had only encountered a story like this once before, when Kristen (our prep team supervisor) returned from Vegas. She told me about receiving a dollar bill and knew that she had to go to wheresgeorge.com. The concept behind that site is similar to book crossing. When you receive a bill, you go to wheresgeorge.com and type in the serial number. Apparently, she did and saw that the last person to have that bill was from Ohio and the note said: Bringing this to Vegas, hoping it will bring me luck! That was in October and Kristen received the bill in January. Kristen left a note that she was off to spend the dollar bill on something fun, which is exactly what she did. She spent it at a hibachi!

These tracking websites are most definitely cool and I'd love to see some promotional books ending up on bookcrossing.com!

Advertising Yourself With promotional Games

There's nothing more fun than a game, but there's also no better way of advertising yourself. Promotional games, especially when printed on a promotional business card, are perfect ways to draw attention to your logo. People can play the game as a minor distraction at work, or while waiting for a bus or train. Of course, there are certain times when promotional games should not be played. Key example: a court case was recently declared a mistrial when it was discovered that several of the jurors had been spending their time in the jury box not listening to evidence or testimony, but instead playing Sudoku!

Promotional Pizza Dough

So over in Brazil, at Nacional Supermarket, July 10th marked National Pizza Day. That is a fantastic holiday that should be celebrated world wide, if you ask me. The promotion that the supermarket went with is one of the more interesting ones that I have seen. A piece of pizza dough was attached to ceilings in and around the area with a sign advertising the supermarket and National Pizza Day.

I'm assuming the pizza dough was secured well-enough that it didn't fall off. But hey, if it people did happened to get hit with falling dough, perhaps some promotional pizza cutters could have made up for that!

Pedal Power

If there is one thing I've learned recently, it's that true cyclists do not mess around. True cyclists train hard and ride harder.

This promotional sign advertised the Tour De France in Australia and did so powered by one of the aforementioned serious cyclists. The promotional sign displayed scrolling ads, that appeared on screen as the cyclist pedaled to power it.

So bravo to all the serious cyclists out there, and bravo to our own Greg Hill who just last week participated in the Livestrong Challenge, riding 100 miles in support of the fight against cancer. I myself could never have done that, and I would have opted for advertising an event with the Gemline Endurance Radio Pedometer Kit. Actually I would have probably advertised the event with any promotional products, as long as it meant I didn't have to ride the bike!

Custom Ice Cube Trays Advertise Fiat Air Conditioning

I'm not exactly all that sure why Fiat's are advertising that they have air conditioning because I thought that all cars came standard with AC these days. None the less this custom ice cube tray is a fun promotion. Nothing says refreshing and cool like ice cubes. Custom promotional products are always an interesting gift, since recipients do not expect them, and they're unlike anything else.

McDonald's Take on the Classic Egg Timer

McDonald's has been at the forefront of creative advertising for years. From their promotional games, like Monopoly to their impressive promotional toys created exclusively for their Happy Meals. I'm sure there are people out there who remember the Barbie and Hot Wheels Happy Meals.

A few years ago, they advertised their new salads with a promotional billboard made of grass and now they've surpassed that creative billboard with a new one. This promotional billboard is designed in the shape of an egg, and opens and closes daily during breakfast hours. So if you're driving down the road at night, you won't be tempted with the possibility of an Egg McMuffin, since the egg is only open between the hours of 6:30 and 10:30am.

Excellent use of what can be a boring advertising medium (promotional billboards usually aren't all that exciting). And it really gives new meaning to the words "Egg Timer."

Wimbledon Goes Green with Grass Photograph

How do you properly advertise a sport which has been famous for hundreds of years in today's eco-centered world? Easy. You do it with grass.

Wimbledon and HSBC teamed together to advertise the tournament this year, and their approach was definitely a unique one. Instead of wasting paper to create print advertisements, they literally grew their own ad. According to Ads of the World, which posted the piece, here's how it works.

By projecting a black and white negative image onto a patch of grass as it grows (in a dark room) they use natural photosensitive properties of the grass to reproduce photographs – thus using grass as a living photographic medium.

From far away, the image is seen, but when looked at up close, all that one can see is blades of grass. Next to the ad, they have information about the three chosen for the photo and once again, Wimbledon went with a very unique approach. Instead of choosing well known professions that are widely recognizable, they went with 3 people who deserved to be recognized: a woman who qualified, the head groundsman at Wimbledon, and a coach for the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative.

This is by far one of the most eco-friendly promotions that I have ever seen and who knew that grass could be used as an advertising medium. Be careful where you step, you might just be crushing one of the next hot promotional products.

    Holy iPhone Batman

About half an hour ago, I was cleaning my desk when an IM came through from Annand, one of our web developers. Normally, I'm right on top of anything he sends me but I glanced at the link and saw the words iPhone launch, and went back to cleaning. It's not that I didn't care, but I haven't really been able to find my desk in about a week and I needed to install my new speakers.

I searched Ads of the World to find the latest and greatest promotional products that were being used by companies, when Sarah (the other one...and just to clear things up, yes there are two of us, yes we work in the same department, and yes we share an office) walked in and said, wow Annand really wants an iPhone. The link he sent me popped into my head and went back to the IM window. Sure enough, it was regarding the iPhone launch but I wondered to myself, what's the big deal?

And then I clicked the link.

Holy iPhone launch Batman! The pictures at engadget are insane. This has to top anything that anyone has ever waited on line for. This is bigger than Black Friday, bigger than the Wii, bigger than PS3. This guy even brought his baby!

Luckily Apple store employees identified themselves by wearing bright orange promotional t-shirts. Apparently, at 8:11 this morning they came and stood at the doors of the Apple store on 5th Ave in NYC cheering like maniacs. They were on hand to answer any questions and apparently to congratulate people who stayed up for hours to get this thing.

I'm especially loving what's going on, or rather what went on in Sydney Australia. People took this camp out seriously and made an Apple promotional tent. See, apparently all you need is some masking tape and spray paint and you can make your own promotional products.

    Promotional Foosball for Monster.com

I'm lucky to be in a job that I enjoy coming to every single day, but I know people in other companies who are absolutely miserable. And monster.com, one of the most well-known job sites knows this as well. For their latest statement, they've taken a foosball game and replaced one of the red players with a ballerina. The tag line reads "Stuck in the wrong job? Monster.com" Promotional games are always in fashion, simply because they're fun. However, with this particular game, it doesn't work out so well for the person playing red.

Cancer Research Creates Sculptures From Ashtrays

When smoking was banned in every bar, club, and restaurant in the UK on July 1st, 2007 surely some people were upset. However, Cancer Research saw an opportunity. Their advertising agency created custom donation bags to collect glass ashtrays, which were then melted down and turned into sculptures. The sculptures were sold on eBay to raise money for cancer research. As long as there was a large amount of advertising promoting both the collection and the auction, this should have worked well. And I suppose I can forgive the fact that they used plastic bags to collect the ash trays. After all, the vases are made from recycled material, so I suppose that makes up for the fact that they didn't use promotional eco-friendly bags.

    Mercedes Christmas Promotion

It's just about mid July, so it seems only fitting that I'm blogging about a Christmas promotion done by Mercedes Benz. They created a custom star to put atop Christmas trees and the star, of course, was their logo. Their logo works for this kind of promotion, yet not every one's will. It also begs the question how many people would really put this on top of their Christmas trees.

Promotional holiday gifts are excellent ways to reinforce your branding with your loyal customers and show appreciation to hardworking employees. And it's never too early to plan for your holiday promotions. Order ahead of the game so you won't have to incur any rush charges or have to worry about stock availability.

Serial Killers Use Cling Wrap, Too

Or at least that's what the FX channel wanted the media to believe when they sent this promotion advertising the launch of the second season of Dexter. Dexter Morgan is a serial killer who only hunts other serial killers. Several possibilities come to mind about what promotional products could be used to advertise this show. One could go the inexpensive route and go with blood drop stress relievers. Or maybe something a little more expensive and classy, like a promotional carving set? The possibilities are endless, yet the promotion team decided to go a different route and chose some promotional wrapping paper. And who knows better about what to wrap dead bodies in than a serial killer? According to the imprint on the package sent to media outlets, Saran Wrap is the perfect accessory for serial killers:

"Due to it's impermeability and adhesion, keeps the victim well wrapped and the floor free of blood spatter."

Funny, I just used cling wrap for left overs. Good to know that not only can it keep my lasagna fresh, but it can also serve as an important tool in any future crimes.

Stop Throwing Your Eyeballs at Me ESPN

I'm not really a fan of sports, unlike the 10,000 Met fans that reside in this office with me, but I can appreciate a good sports promotion when I see it. And this is one great sports promotion. Custom sports balls were created for ESPN with the tag line "You can't get closer." The balls were designed as eye balls. I love this. I might get a little creeped out by catching a eyeball baseball, but regardless, this is a really fun promotion.

Feeding Hungry Children is Still Easy

Last week, I blogger about promotional decals in shopping carts that raised awareness about hungry children. Apparently, Germany put a different spin on the idea that was originally used in South Africa. Instead of promotional decals, promotional inserts were put into shopping bags. Once again, it's the image of a hungry child and it's equally moving, especially if the person is bagging their own groceries. While these inserts are custom promotional products, they work just as well.

Mowing the Lawn...365 Days a Year

A hysterically funny bit on Z100 (a local radio station) this morning had to do with mowing your lawn, and it made me love this promotional calendar even more. This page a day calendar shows you a fresh cut lawn on December 31st, after all the pages have been removed. Creative concept and fun execution.

I think the only thing that could possibly make this promotional calendar created for Bosche Lawn Mowers any better was if it was a scratch and sniff. Theres nothing better than the smell of fresh cut grass.
