Sticking it to the Polar Bears

Here we go again with the stickers on cars. The Taiwan Environmental Agency created this ad targeted at drivers. The goal was to remind them that less driving means less CO2 production, which in turn is better for polar animals like polar bears, penguins, and seals. The promotional stickers that were designed fit over the key locks of car doors, so that whenever you inserted your key you were essentially stabbing an animal and killing it. Apparently they pulled it off in Taiwan, but it definitely would not work in the US. For one thing, several cars have key less entry, thus making this ambient nearly impossible to understand. And secondly, maybe I'm selfish on this one, but don't stick something on my car. That's MY car.

My mom occasionally donates to the World Wildlife Foundation and every so often they'll send her promotional gifts like imprinted blankets or holiday ornaments. That's fine. Send me whatever you want, just don't put anything on my car!

Promotional Pizza Decal: Rude, Yet Interesting

I'm enjoying this promotional decal for Punk Rock Pizza in Albuquerque. The pizza place wanted something different to promote their delivery service, so these clear promotional clings were custom designed to look like splattered pizza slices and then attached to glass doors in the delivery areas.

It's not the most conventional way to go and that's what makes it work. I can't count the number of random Dominoes menus that end up in my mailbox every month. If I'm in the mood they make it into the cabinet, otherwise they go in the garbage. But this unconventional pizza promotion definitely stands out. I'd be intrigued, maybe check out their website, see what they've got. I wouldn't expect the pizza to be delivered so harshly (IE thrown at my door) and while this probably wouldn't be the type of image you'd want for your corporate gifts, it's still an interesting promotional idea to say the very least.

Promotional Packaging

Studies have proven that brand recognition is a well-known decision making factor when it comes to purchasing anything. Think about all the times you've chosen Coca Cola over the regular store brand of soda or if you've been driving down the road and in the distance you spy the golden arches. So when Dollz Inc wanted to focus solely on their brand, they chose to do it via their packaging. Promotional bags have always been a top choice for retail stores, but Dollz Inc went a different route.

Instead of typical shopping bags, the packaging was designed to look like a doll house, so that every doll goes home in a house. It further adds to the fun of buying a doll. It's also extremely similar to a really well-known brand that does this already: Build a Bear.

Just another point that packaging does play a key role in the experiences you have with your customers. Even businesses that aren't retail should be concerned with packaging. Whether it be company stationary or the annual corporate gifts, just remember that every move you make should be worthy of leaving a lasting impression and packaging is no exception.

Why it's Hot

There's no denying that a picture is worth a thousand words and that's why digital picture frames are so hot right now. This unique deluxe digital picture frame stands out from the rest because it's a classic frame and a digital frame all in one. Come On Baby, Light My Fire

Interesting promotion done for the Belgian Burn Wound Center. At the World Championship BBQ (an event that touted over 30,000 BBQ lovers)the Burn Center wanted to draw attention to BBQ related burn injuries. So, they set a guy on fire.

Now they've definitely got the right location to do this. And if anyone should be responsible for setting someone on fire, it's a burn center. Should anything go wrong, they would know exactly what to do. And this stunt was probably extremely carefully and safely prepared from start to finish. However, IF anything did go wrong, they'd have to take the heat (pun intended) and that would be beyond embarrassing, it would be a PR disaster. Granted, they took a chance. They could have gone a simpler route and handed out some promotional products like firetruck stress balls and let the chips fall. As fire prevention week approaches, I've been seeing the signs for the annual Open House at the local fire stations. However, unlike the Belgium Burn Wound Center, I can safely say that I don't think our local fire department is going to be lighting anyone aflame. And to this I say bravo. PR stunts can be effective when done correctly, but if done wrong the damage outweighs the cost. But you can always count on one thing. If there's been a bad PR stunt, the company will most likely be sending out some amazing corporate gifts come the holidays. As if a pen set will distract from the fact that they completely destroyed their image. Although, I have seen some pretty nice pen sets...

Promotional Meat Wrappings

I'm enjoying this promotion done for a Safari Park in Belgium. A local butcher shop was given custom paper imprinted to look like the mouth of a lion. Obviously, you can see the point of the design in the ad below. I love it for one reason: it's simple. Who would think to use butchers paper to substitute for promotional products?

This promotion just proves that you don't have to spend a lot to get a lot. The safari didn't spend thousands of dollars trying to entice people with elaborate corporate gifts. Instead, it was as simple as printing on paper.

Promotional Pets

Kudos to 401k2 (401 K squared) for doing something I haven't yet seen: using pets as promotional products. In this case, beta fish were mailed to prospective clients with the metaphor that a 401K is a living breathing entity, just like the fish.

Personally, I'm not really a fan of this idea. Mailing any type of animal is usually frowned upon in my book. Granted, the case has been made at Ads of the World that Siamese fighting fish (aka beta fish) are extremely tough and can survive in difficult conditions, including little to almost no water being present in their bowl. Doesn't mean that they should be subjected to these conditions though. Not to mention the fact that should one beta fish die, think about that for the effectiveness of the promotion. Opening up a package and seeing a dead fish from an investment firm claiming to "live and breathe" your investments?

Apparently, Microsoft did the same sort of promotion, except instead of mailing the fish they hand delivered them to their clients. While fish are definitely unconventional corporate gifts, the way Microsoft did their promotion seems much more humane. Additionally, this promotion would probably be a dream come true for the art department's Michael Jolly. He's been pushing for a fish tank in here for over a year now.

There's a Note for that

One of my personal favorite promotional products is the Post-It note. They're simple, they're eco-friendly (if you buy the recycled version) and they're affordable. But the best thing about post-its is that you can stick them absolutely anywhere. The company's new slogan, "There's a Note for that" was launched with an internet video contest. The goal of said contest? Show the people at Post-It just how you use their product. Be inventive and take something out of the ordinary and show the people at Post-It that there's a note for that.

Yesterday on Yahoo video, one of the contest entries was featured simply because it's become an internet sensation. A realtor by the name of Shay decided that Post-It's are about more than just jotting down when the next meeting is. They're about more than branding your company logo. Post-Its are amazing and when combined, they can turn into something beautiful.

Of course, Post-It notes aren't the answer to every promotion. They can double as the Mona Lisa, but they might not work out if you choose to give them as corporate gifts. However, you can always buy a promotional desk set that features promotional post-its. So I guess the people at Post-It are right: there is a note for that.

Pot O' Gold At The End Of The Rainbow

There's nothing like hitting the jackpot. Whether you're playing the slots in Vegas or a scratch off at your desk, everyone dreams of hitting it big (present blogger included). When BC Lottery Corporation in Vancouver Canada wanted a way to publicize their upcoming 27 million dollar jackpot, they came up with their own take on the old adage, "The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow."

Colored gels were placed on lights that illuminated the sky, making it appear as if the sign advertising the jackpot was indeed the end of the rainbow. Here at Motivators we've got our own treasure hunt going on today in honor of it being "All Hands on Deck Week." Promotional stress relievers and promotional fun putty has been hidden in the common areas of the office and whoever finds the most wins a prize. In addition to getting to keep the stress relievers and the nutty putty, they'll be getting some lovely corporate gifts.

Lego My Dog

The makers of the Meister Luca D-Lux camera wanted to show that their product took excellent quality pictures, much better than the competition. But pictures are their specialty, they decided that advertising their product using that medium was simply too one-dimensional.

This blurry 3-d dog was created out of legos to show what can happen when photos, more specifically a photo taken by a different camera, are viewed up close. They can be pixelated, distorted and just plain ugly. It's just another case of lego advertising. When in doubt, advertise with promotional lego blocks. You can even use legos as business cards.

Sausage Vs. Sausage

I'm not a fan of cured meats really and I'm not that great at foosball, but I'll tell you what. You put the two together and that just might get me interested.

Digennaro Communications in NYC created this promotional foosball game for Hatfield Quality Meats to use at events to increase brand exposure and create a unique brand experience. And really, there's no experience quite like playing foosball with sausage. I think this really might have been the dream of Joey Tribiani from Friends, combining two of his loves: food and foosball.

As I said, I'm not the biggest fan of cured meats, but if you are and can't afford a custom sausage foosball table, we have a great selection of promotional meat and cheese gift sets. I can't guarantee that you'll have the same kind of "experience" but maybe you can still have some fun with a block of cheddar and some Brenner Wafers.

A Bold Business Card

I'm always on the look out for interesting business cards because, when done creatively, they can be perfect promotional products. This one, designed to look like a cassette tape, was created for a recording studio. While several others have commented that the cassette is such an outdated form of media, I like it. It's a unique take on something so bland and boring.

Stretching Your Promotion: Conveyor Belts are Fun

I enjoy this promotional decal designed for Milky Way. It's been applied to the entire conveyor belt, so that when it moves, the gooey caramel appears to stretch immensely. Granted it might not be seen by everyone at the supermarket the families that buy in bulk may miss the entertaining little sticker as they load on all their groceries, it's still a unique promotion.

Breast Cancer Awareness: Get on Board

I recently saw a Twitter post, or "tweet" as they're called where someone had said "Think Pink in September." I wondered why considering that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and that's the time when everyone is told to "Think Pink." But being of the belief that planning ahead is key, especially when it comes to marketing and promotions, my fellow Twitterer was right: Thinking Pink in September is absolutely necessary in order to have a successful Breast Cancer Awareness promotion. So since pink one of my favorite colors, I thought pink and here's what I came up with:

Pink Cowbell
I talked about this in August, but I can't help it. I love the cowbell and it's great for Breast Cancer Walks. Wondering how it'll look with a logo? Check out the version Motivators did for the Making Strides Walk last year.

UniBall 207 Pink Gel Pen
Not only is this an affordable pen that looks great with a logo, but it's pink ink makes it a perfect giveaway for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Additionally, the 207's ink has been specially designed to withstand check washing. So write out all those donation checks in pink!

Folding Chair with Carrying Bag
This folding chair with carrying bag is a perfect incentive for fundraising. Offer these to top fundraisers and they'll definitely do their best to win this prize since these chairs are perfect for tailgating events, company picnics and trips to the beach.

Those are just a few ways to "Think Pink" this September and for more ideas, check out the Breast Cancer Awareness podcast over at our Promotional Product Podcasts.

Promotional Aromatherapy

A couple weeks ago, I posted an interesting promotion done by Right Guard, where a can of Right Guard was placed inside a "Break In Case of Emergency" type of container. Now, Stella Aromatherapy has the exact same concept. This container was placed in conference rooms with the theory that sometimes meetings can get a little heated and everyone needs to calm down. So in case of heated emergency, break glass and spray this aromatherapy spray and all will be well.

Personally, I think that giving out a promotional aromatherapy set at the end of the meeting might be more effective or you could hand our promotional stress relievers before the meeting. The spray idea is cute, but chances are it will never be used and thus no one will know the benefits of the product. May as well put the product's name on a stress reliever. And if angry meeting goers happen to start chucking these things around, that's just more logo exposure!

That's a Whole Lotta Ducks

You think Motivators offers a lot of rubber ducks? On August 31, the Great British Duck Race was held and 250,000 rubber ducks were released into Molesey Lock for a 1 kilometer race. The going rate for sponsoring a duck was £2, with a portion of that money going to benefit various charities. It's a yearly tradition and it's the second year in a row that Great Britian has broken the Guiness World Record for rubber ducks. While these little guys weren't promotional rubber ducks, they were imprinted. Each duck had a number imprinted on it, so it would be clear who won. The winner? Number 60595! The grand prize was £10,000. Not bad for a £2 investment.

One of the most interesting things about the duck race is that it's heavily touted as being eco-friendly. In fact, there's even a disclaimer on the website that the Great British Duck race works closely with the Environment Agency to ensure that every duck is removed from the river, so as to not pose a threat to wildlife.

Just another thing you can do with promotional rubber ducks! Race 'em down a river for charity.

Melting Promotions

This promotion, done for the Blafjoll Ski Resort in Iceland features real snow placed outside of its element. I'm assuming the 30 on the sign means 30 kilometers. According to the discussion of this promotion on Ads of the World, this is in fact real snow. And judging from the picture, it doesn't look to be too cold. So my question is this: how much do you pay someone to come up with an ad that will melt away in a matter of a few hours?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I just don't see the benefit in promotions that disappear in a matter of mere minutes or hours. Why not use promotional products, which keep your logo on them permanently. Even if someone opts not to keep them, your message will still be out there somewhere. As opposed to this one where the entire point of this promotion will just melt away.

Tie One On...

With the vast majority of promotional apparel that there is available in today's market companies have almost every clothing option available to promote their logo. There's promotional t-shirts which have been around forever (I'm sure when cavemen invented fire they created promotional t-shirts to advertise it!). There's promotional sweatshirts, promotional caps, promotional socks, and even promotional underwear. But when you want to be professional about promoting your business, you can go with classic promotional woven shirts. And to accessorize it, why not use a promotional tie?

The Allan Gray Graduate Recruitment program did just that on campuses in South Africa. Knowing that graduating students would be looking for jobs they offered something that would be thought of in conjunction with interviewing. Interesting, no?

Leeds Action Dice

Item Number: 18242

Why They're Hot:
These promotional decision making dice are like the executive version of a Magic 8 ball, if a Magic 8 ball gave business friendly advice. These metal dice sit in a matching alloy metal cradle and are ready to roll at a moments notice. Roll both and get a combination of advice such as "Be Grateful Today" or "Be Sincere x2." They're a classy looking desk accessory and they're fun. They're great as a motivational tool for employees or even a corporate gift.

Smooth Couches are so much more attractive...

So here's an interesting one. Nivea (you know, the skin lotion people) created a promotional couch to demonstrate how one of their magical skin care products can smooth away cellulite. Interesting concept...one side of the couch is bumpy and the other half is smooth. Everyday, I think that I have seen the weirdest promotional products known to man and then I see something like this and I stand corrected. What will they think of next?
