March is used to celebrate and honor the contributions by women in history. Every year, there is a particular theme assigned to Women’s History month. The 2015 theme is “Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives.” According to the National Women’s History Month organizers, 2015 marks the 35th anniversary of the Women’s History Movement and the National Women’s History Project. On March 28th, NWHP.org will honor the 2015 honorees at an event held in Los Angeles, California. This event will showcase their remarkable work and devotion to shaping the lives of women today and in the future.
According to the National Women’s History Projects (www.brooklyn.com), this is how Women’s History Month came to be.
- 1963: Equal Pay Act
- 1964: Civil Rights Act
- 1977: Title IX implemented
- 1981: Congress passed, authorized, and requested that the President proclaim the week beginning March 7th, 1982 as Women’s History Week.
- 1987: After being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress designated March as Women’s History Month.
- 1988-1994: Congress passed additional resolutions authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month.
